The Beach

The Beach - Jaye Frances I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.Where do i start? Right, it was awesome. This book contains two short stories, one is the beach which is about a man who wanted the beach all to himself so he made a negotiation with Efil, who's more like a professional genie slash salesmen. He thought he was making a good deal, thought about it long and hard so that there will be no consequences but in the end, let's just say that the deal wasn't in his favor. This is similar to the second story, short time, and like the first story, the man made a deal with the devil (government that is) that he could have everything he wanted in 6 months in exchange for working with a special "assignment" from the government. Of course, the gullible man that he is, he falls for it , suffers mental torture on his own and eventually falls for another bad deal.i honestly think that this would be a great tale for teens and up, it's like a more mature version of the tales we've come to know and love. Those tales we had when we were kids and got us scared and guilty whenever we do anything that was at par with the bad guy in our story books. These stories help us realize that our decisions no matter how seemingly small it is, creates impact. And that consequences and "payment" for "good deals" should never be taken lightly. I'm giving this 5 stars and obviously, seeing how much i enjoyed this, The Beach is highly recommended. Yet another excellent work by Jaye Frances. (Seriously, no kidding she's awesome.)

Revamp

Revamp - Beck Sherman This book is a big WTF. In a good way. It's not your typical sparkling gorgeous, the world-is-perfect-with-a-bloodsucker-in-tow novel. This isn't the kind of novel that would make you wish that you were bitten , to be supplied by processed blood from the "human" farms. The book was more on humanity, ot was more on the survivors that were united in a way.the author Beck Sherman did an excellent job of carefully bringing up each character, with it's own unique back story that makes you say "oh that's why" ever so often. Loved the ending won't spoil it for this review but all I can say although it is a LONG novel that I literally had to make the font size of my ibooks app mega small just to reassure myself that I was making progress with this, it was definitely worth reading and I highly recommend it for those who are fed up with cheesy vamp novels and just want a refreshing -not so chill read every now and then. It was an excellent situational read for me, and it made me relate to some of the characters in the book like Emma and over all there wasn't anything negative about this novel in terms of the plot and it's construction just wish that it were a little short than it is now cause I kinda have issues with lengthy novels.

Well Written, Well Edited, Unknown Books: Don't Judge a Book by Its Publisher

Well Written, Well Edited, Unknown Books: Don't Judge a Book by Its Publisher - The indiePENdents (Got this book for review) 1.5 stars. i'm not sure how i'm gonna explain this book, how i feel about it, how i reacted to some scenes...it was just not my thing i guess? This is like 50 shades but in a more intense less equipment ready and more fantasy filled erotic novel. The beginning was really promising, you know, the kind of novel that was pretty "gripping" , you're going to be expecting that you'll finish it really fast, get hooked and just let a day pass you by , but it just didn't do it for me. Micah's character is THAT guy, that armani looking guy you'd be ready to drop to the floor and be naked for and Ella had a pretty great character profile on her too, but somehow, the lust, the love, the hate, and everything else in between just didn't feel genuine. It was all "we-looked-at-each-other-there-was-hunger-in-our-eyes-so-lets-just-get-our-freak-on" and then twilight-y fights and conflicts in between.Congratulations to the author though cause it seems that a lot of other readers loved the story, the author did a pretty good job of making something that will sell to a lot of people, it is just so unfortunate that I'm one of the people who weren't sold on this one.Their focus in the was a bit off too in my opinion but towards the end it did make sense.i'm not sure if i'm going to read the next book.

The Dark and Hollow Places (Forest of Hands and Teeth)

The Dark and Hollow Places (Forest of Hands and Teeth) - Carrie Ryan Dark and Hollow places is the third installment of the forest of hands and teeth series by Carrie Ryan. I'm having a difficult time deciding on whether i'm gonna rant or rave on this one. There are parts where I think she did a great job, very creative, excellent writing style and the some parts where really catching my attention. however, this is not the case for the other parts of the book. There were some dull moments, some moments I wished were just completely removed from the book and some that my eyes just want to skim through and forget completely. This is more about Gabry's long lost sister Annah. So the first one was about Mary (gabry's "mother) the second book was about (gabry's adventure) and the third one is mostly about Annah but it also binds all stories of the important characters in the series.I liked the really gripping dystopian feel of the story, it's not as predictable like other dystopian novels, it keeps you guessing and it makes you want to finish the whole thing. The despair, the anger and the love were evident in the book. The author did a good job of not sugar-coating a zombie filled world with hearts and flowers. She showed how humans would really react to such situations. No "love will conquer all" vibe because the characters gave in to defeat from time to time in order to survive. I didn't like the love square thing going on with Annah , Catcher, Gabry and Elias. It's like they are just switching lovers cause it's more comfortable, especially when Annah thought she had feelings for Elias and then she saw him with her sister, - few moments later she got over it and channeled her feelings for Catcher who was Gabry's old lovey dovey. Elias "tried" to love Annah , searched for her everywhere , found Gabry instead and suddenly he "loved Gabry all along". Crazy crazy love whatever there. I also was not fond of the last part. They escaped because of a big ass ballon along with the soulers. And suddenly everything's okay and the only one having a rough time was Annah. It's like Noah's ark on Air. Good but not the kind of book that ties the whole adventure together.(i was given a free digital copy of this through b4r.(thank you!) Unbiased review. (obviously) )

The Dead-Tossed Waves (Forest of Hands and Teeth, Book 2)

The Dead-Tossed Waves (Forest of Hands and Teeth, Book 2) - Carrie Ryan Dead-tossed waves is the second book to the trilogy, the forest of hands and teeth by Carrie Ryan.  This was way better than book one. I liked the first book, but there were some aspects of the story where I just didn't love. And I think I said I didn't like the protagonist Mary, because she was immature and selfish yadda yadda, but in book two she was a really great character.  I liked her a lot. A good motherly figure, an image of a survivor and an old woman who eventually fell inlove with someone she didn't love before.  Dead-tossed waves was a good dystopian survival zombie book unlike the first one which felt more of a dystopian zombie romance more than anything else. Not that i'm complaining though because I honestly loved how these books are connected without being way too similar, and the themes for each book makes it more interesting to read since it progresses into a more complex story than the first.I liked it how it started as a perfect world for Gabry, something that her mother wanted for her, it was world that was safe and pretty happy like ours. They were taught about how to defend themselves against the Mudo or the unconsecrated from book one, but were never really prepared to face one on their own in reality. She did see some Mudo washed up on the beach and she sometimes watches her mother decapitate the Mudo but she never really gave it much thought until that night when everything changed, at first she thought it would all move forward and be for the better since Catcher, Cira's brother confessed his feelings to her at the amusement park... Things went crazy , and her the life she knew was destroyed and she doesn't know who she is, and she can never bring it back to the way it once was. It was a rollercoaster ride for her, confusing and just down right twisted.  She wasn't really "Gabrielle" , Elias knew who she really was, Catcher was infected but didn't die, Cira was being bitchy and suicidal and eventually turned, and all of that crazy goodness till the end of the book. Can't wait to get started on book 3. 4.5 stars.(This book was given to me as a review copy bu the author rest assured that all opinions are my own.)

The Dark and Hollow Places (Forest of Hands and Teeth)

The Dark and Hollow Places (Forest of Hands and Teeth) - Carrie Ryan The story begins with a "chosen" group of people headed by the sisterhood, and as how an exciting story goes, a curious and emotionally attached girl named Mary wanted to know if there was something else beyond the fences of which she grew up in. She wanted to know if the stories her mother told her was true , and if there really is an ocean where she and Travis (the guy she loves who is the brother of her betrothed ) can have a life of love and freedom outside of the village. So I think i've spoiled a good bit of the story now soo..Whatever exciting things that happened next, will be revealed once you read the book but basically that is the beginning of thrilling adventure into the forest filled with the Unconsecrated or the Zombies who used to be like you and me before the Return. The story was great, as usual i'm not fond of the main female protagonist, cause I think she is selfish, immature and obviously she doesn't understand what contentment is and how she could be happy at some point without seeing the ocean and just be in the arms of the people she loves. She had to realize it the hard way when everyone she knew died. She saw the ocean, met someone similar to Travis and has apparently moved on. And like usual, two guys who are complete idiots well for some martyrs of love but i'd go with idiots- They don't know what they want, and when they do know they suddenly get clueless and just wait for something bad to happen or for Mary to lead them or talk some sense into them. But I liked how at some point they redeemed themselves by the end of the book. I liked how this was more than just a zombie book, it was a good dystopian read, it had a romantic feel, parts on friendship and family which was definitely a good mix that separates this from other dystopian novels who mostly bases the story on just two people and their undying love. I also loved how Mary chose her dream of seeing the ocean than just kneeling down and praying for things to happen, like some books that I don't like where their quest was to follow the path of God or whatever. I like it. 3.5 stars.(This book was sent to me for free along with the 2 other books in this trilogy. This fact has nothing to do with my opinions about the book/s. )

The Sounding

The Sounding - Carrie Salo Took me a really really long time before I finished this book. (Sorry Ms.Carrie) thank you for sending me a copy of this book to review even if i'm on the other side of the world :) this review will be written with complete honesty so, good or bad, know that how i got a copy does not in any way influence my opinions on the story itself. Anyway...Let me start by saying that this is not a book for a light easy breezy reader. This is packed with so much information to it. It might be a little difficult for some people to read, Admittedly, even I had trouble getting into it at the beginning but I found that the key here really is to read the story continously, don't do anything else, don't let yourself get distracted by some other things or whatever because once you do, you might find yourself lost while reading the rest of the chapters. the events were very detailed , heavy on biblical references and prophecies which is unique but I don't think that the reader would have any problem reading this book if he/she have not read the book of revelations from the bible. (because i haven't but i understood and I liked the story)The story was well executed , the characters were very much alive, there weren't some characters that felt distant to the story and to the point the author is trying to make and it makes you wonder, i loved the mystery and the quest, over allit was a great book. I was just a bit overwhelmed by the number of pages in the bookand how small the writing was that I got scared of reading, cause I felt like it had a bit of a complicated textbook feel which turned out to be complete paranoia on my end.4 stars :)

The Kure

The Kure - Jaye Frances Paranormal-occult romance. ---WOW. That's one word to describe this book. It was so hard to put down, the story was very intriguing, unique but not as dark or demonic as I expected when I first read the sypnosis. My imagination was running wild as the story progresses. The images of Sarah or any girl for that matter, trying to fulfill the directions of the Kure was just disturbing. How the author Jaye Frances described the condition of John Tyler's condition was gruesome and it's insane how devotion could overlook such a heinous thing. I did expect the leeching to happen and it doesn't work so they follow the kure anyway, but it didn't happen.. It was fine though because something better happened and it certainly was more creative than what I had imagined. This was a short read but the story was not compromised it didn't feel unfinished but there is a sense of mystery at the end that makes you want to get out of the house and track down the next book. I have no complaint for this book. The writing was excellent, the setting, the plot was amazing, the characters were beautifully constructed. Seriously, I did not expect myself to have this kind of reaction for this book. The next book to this is the Karetakers, a continuation of Sarah and John's story. 5 ++ stars.-I received this book as a review copy from the author but this fact did not affect my opinion/review on the book-

Fifty Shades of Grey: Book One of the Fifty Shades Trilogy

Fifty Shades of Grey - E.L. James 50 shades of fucked up. Definitely not for everyone. Bad book for teens. Interesting book for adults. And if i read another my inner goddess line one more time i swear i'm going to lose it,

Blackstone & Brenwen: The Mirror & The Meretrix

Blackstone & Brenwen: The Mirror & The Meretrix - Andrew D. Mellusco Okaaayy my review got deleted, anyway...Really great book. Who would've thought that a story on fairytale law could be such a great read? This is a modern and more mature twist on the fairytalea and myths we used to enjoy when we were kids. It was inspiring to me because it has always been my dream to become a lawyer, bringing voice and justice to the oppressed, protecting those we love and all that good stuff.i did find myself a bit confused on some of the chapters maybe because it was a bit too complex? But that isn't necessarily a problem ..maybe that's just me.. Beautifully written, this could be a good night book for those who share the same interest or those who wants to read something that makes you think and not just imagine the events of the story.

In the Middle of Nowhere

In the Middle of Nowhere - Julie Ann Knudsen Better than any Nicholas Sparks book i've read. Actually from the cover of this book I kinda assumed that it was some mysterious and weird fantasy romance novel. Since i've been reading a lot of those lately. The story is pretty simple and real. Nothing too pretentious. It's a story about loss, a new beginning, family and love. So basically Willow lost her father and because of financial limitations they had to move in the middle of nowhere and start their new and permanent life there. it wasn't great at first, everyone had to adjust with the smaller house and the simpler life. Sooo anyway,.I cried at the end. First because i thought Michael died because of the last poem she read and then at the church i was surprised that Michael was there so i continued to cry happy tears this time. I liked how Willow's character reflected the emotions of a girl who is grieving, a normal teenager who sometimes loses her way, and a mature young lady who at the end of the day, will sure make the right decisions. I loved Michael Cooper's character. Mysterious, sweet and somehow, his character helps Willow get back down to earth. His presence in the story seems to be Willow's wake up call whenever she does something wrong like the reckless moments with Tessa, Connor and Rocky. I also liked how even though Willow was relatively new and had a few friends, she stood up for Tessa when she was being unfairly judged by her original set of friends. I loved the poems, short, sweet and true. Really great read. No complaints.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer - Michelle Hodkin I honestly don't know how i should rate this book. Let me start by saying that it is a great book, nothing too chiclit sounding, no "fifty shades" awkward or "twilight " love triangles involved. It was more of a book about a girl who was traumatized, have no memory of the events that had occured..tried to go back to her normal life..finding out that what was happening to her was far from normal then realizing that she was responsible for the recent deaths of the people around her.. she loses her mind, said farewell to Noah and her family and tried to turn herself in only to discover that she may not have been responsible for everything and that her problem was that her ex boyfriend -who was supposed to be dead if she was really some psycho, was still alive. So yeah some spoiler there. I don't fully believe that she didn't do anything, because some of the deaths couldn't have been done by Jude or some other person and the ouija board part about the cause of her friend's death.. So i kinda think that it could've been both. She thinks about harm on someone she dislike and then they get hurt out of that thought..magically.. Or it could've been Jude. He might have followed her around, heard some things, or had a strange connection with her too like Noah and then executed the thought as a personally revenge so Mara would go bonkers. Obviously this story can take on a lot of different paths. I feel Iike the author has a very complex mind and I liked that which is why i'm so excited for book two. I'm just not sure if it's already out. I got excited, i got confused, i laughed and i panicked while reading this book. I liked the idea that Noah is a healer and that little fact kind of balances her and their romance episodes in the book. Beautifully written, unique and truly worth reading. This would make a great movie.Thank you to B4R for a copy of this book.:)

Family Values: A Sin City Yarn w/ Certificate of Authenticity! (DF Exclusive Alternate Cover Limited to only 3000!)

Family Values: A Sin City Yarn w/ Certificate of Authenticity! (DF Exclusive Alternate Cover Limited to only 3000!) - Frank Miller (Received a copy of this book from R&R)Quite disappointed. I liked the concept of the book and the cover. It was unique, i haven't really read a fantasy book about sin collectors and I kinda wish they really existed so I and a number of people can just skip church confessions and be at peace without the fear and humiliation of telling a priest or someone who may or may not help get rid of the unwanted emotions. For someone who lived for so long, I didn't appreciate that Lili would feel like an 18 year old human. Although they never age, Ollie sounded like a grandfather in the book and I was pretty shocked with how it all ended. Billy looked very suspicious from the beginning so I was not suprised when THAT happened. All the other characters, I didn't really notice as much. I cannot believe I struggled to finish a 152 paged pdf. I actually assumed that I can go through this in one day. The writing wasn't bad but it wasn't that great either. The second book "Sacrifice" will be released next year. (according to the last page of the file). Is it worth reading? Yes. If you want a fresh concept and if you want a short read. Otherwise... I don't know. It just fell short of my expectations and the story is a bit flat for my liking so not really sure if I can recommend it for any other reason.

101

101 - Margaret Chatwin 5 stars for this book. Well written and the story of Ren and Trigg is something that is happening around us. The abuse and the injustice was really heartbreaking and it is really unfortunate to think that things like these don't just happen in stories although obviously the part about the town 101 is on an extreme angle. At first the antagonists were clearly the father and the NAO and some readers would expect that Trigg and the other inmates would go against them instead but the role of the antagonist slowly shifted into the fellow inmate and big bully in the town, Ace. This may be associated into a real life situation of criminals in jail. There will always be a "leader" or a bully that would put people in their place, mostly a position far more inferior to what they have. I loved how the importance of family was present, the short lived romance of bobby joe and trigg, and the friendship and teamwork that gave rise to their freedom made me think of real people and their tragic stories.. It made me feel very thankful that I do not have to deal with such issues myself and it made me wish that someday no one would have to be in that kind of position. Well done.Oh and congrats to the author. For a short read, this book is better than the longer novels i've read and way better than any of the equally short novels i've read recently.

I've Got Your Number: A Novel

I've Got Your Number - Sophie Kinsella I don't like Poppy, i think she's pretty stupid and nosy. But the slightly unusual plot and the other characters (especially Sam) made me give this book 5 stars.

Don't Call Me Angel

Don't Call Me Angel - Alicia Wright Brewster A short read. i just got this via email for R&R this morning and I'm already done. Quite refreshing to read something shorter than what I usually go for.The story is pretty simple. 2 "fugitives" from hell explored earth, they wanted freedom and a new environment..Alden wanted to have fun, by killing humans and destroying their souls and Six tries to find a way to stop him.. So basically that's it. I couldn't really expect much of a plot considering that the whole thing is only about 120 pages. I just felt like there really wasn't much of a story. I would even go further by saying that there's no story in it. It was more of an introduction to what might happen on book two. I did appreciate the illustrations. I think that this would be a good start for a full-blown graphic novel but not as a typical "meaty" novel that I was hoping to get.
